Definition and Importance of Language Interpreting
Unlike written translations, language interpreting refers to verbal or sign-language communication provided (either simultaneously or consecutively) between users of different languages. Interpreting services for the deaf or hard of hearing and for limited and non-English speakers has never been more important. In addition to being mandated in certain situations under U.S. federal and state laws, it is simply a necessity if companies or organizations wish to successfully compete or participate in a globalized world. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the number of people who are limited or non-English speakers (ages five years and older) is growing every year in the United States and is predicted to rise to 67 million by 2050 – compared to 25.3 million in 2011.
